YOUR CONNECTION TO CLINICAL ROTATIONS
The Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) is a government system dedicated to the medical well being of the federal workers of Mexico. The ISSSTE facility at Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Hospital Amigo de la Madre y el Nino is a 100 bed facility which offers services in Pediatrics, Ob-Gyn, Surgery, and Internal Medicine. It has a neonatal ward, 24 hour Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care unit. It also has an outpatient clinic which offers daily services in virtually every medical specialty. Physicians at the ISSSTE have been trained and specialized at the Mexican system, the USA and Canada. Most of them currently practice medicine in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuhua, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, USA. Students from the Spartan Health Sciences University School of Medicine may perform ALL of their 80 weeks of clinical rotations at the ISSSTE Hospital Amigo de la Madre y el Nino, an official affiliated clinical site, through the Inter Collegiate Agreement that the ISSSTE holds with other universities in Mexico and the World. The ISSSTE is also an official governmental teaching facility that receives interns and residents yearly from several Mexican Universities.
As any other hospital, this one has its rules and are very stringent ones being a government facility as it takes care of federal employees. According to the latest memorandum issued by Dr. Raj Verma, SHSU Clinical Coordinator dated August 3, 2001, the ISSSTE Hospital has advised the following:
1.
Name tags to be worn at the Hospital at ALL times
2.
Clean White Lab Coats to be worn on Hospital premises at ALL times
3.
Mexican Visas are required to be on file immediately
4.
Clean Surgical Scrubs must be carried into the hospital neatly packed in a plastic bag and to be unwrapped in the dressing room and/or operating room ONLY.
5.
Buy a box of surgical caps, shoe covers, and masks prior to starting in Surgery, Anesthesiology, ENT, Pediatrics Surgery, and Ob-Gyn rotations. These items are to be turned in to the ISSSTE Hospital Surgery Department at the beginning of each rotation. Submit a copy of the purchase receipt to our office promptly. 6.
Every morning, upon arriving at the ISSSTE Hospital, you must check in at the Medical Education Office and wait until your attending arrives and guides you personally to your working area.

About 75% of the total population is younger than 35 years old. The city comprises the biggest frontier in Mexico bordering with the States of Texas and New Mexico. It has a yearly precipitation of 9" inches on average and a median temperature of 62.8F. It enjoys an unemployment rate of only 7% and a growing rate of 4.35%. Its infraestructure is composed of: 66.8% Manufacturing Industry, 12.5% Services for Enterprises, 9.0% Commerce and 3.3% Social Services. P.S. No retroactive loan applications for the new amount will be processed for loans prior to May 1, 2001.
Students must demonstrate financial need to qualify for any loan amount above the cost of education. (US $18,500.00)
Special Information For Students Conducting Clinical Rotations at Mexico:
1.
All instructional payments shall be made on a 4 week basis. If you are delinquent with your payment for more than 8 weeks, you will be dropped from the clinical roster of I.S.S.S.T.E. Hospital. Thereafter, such student(s) will be required to pay for 16 weeks in advance before being allowed to continue in any further rotation(s).
2.
Instructional Fee concession(s) made by a Professor for rotations or payment plan arrangement made by a student with the Professor should be in writing with copies to the Clership Office for record purposes.
3.
As future physicians, professional ethics should be demonstrated to the patients, staff and colleagues at all times.
The Clinical Rotations have been divided into sequential groups.Each group of rotations must be completed before proceeding into the next group. The total number of weeks for completion of the curriculum is 80 weeks of supervised clinical rotations. (Click on links to obtain rotation's goals and objectives.)

CLERKSHIP PROCEDURES:
The following procedure must be followed by the student who intends to make arrangements to set up his/her clerkship at a hospital.
1.
The student must write a letter addressed to the Clinical Co-ordinator requesting permission to arrange clerkships prior to starting in any program.















2.
A letter of acceptance must also be requested from the Attending Physician, Chief of the Department or Director of Medical Education of the hospital to be sent to the clerkship office including the following information:
A.
Ackowledging that the student has been accepted into the clinical program.
B.
Clinical rotation that the student is offered at the hospital.
C.
Dates of rotation(s) including the starting and ending dates. (Preferably starting on a Monday and ending on a Friday).
D.
Complete address of the hospital.
E.
Phone number and facsimile number of the hospital.
3.
A student who has difficulty obtaining the letter of acceptance (#2 above), may use the Clerkship Request Form provided by the Clerkship Office. An authorized signature on the form is required from the hospital.
4.
When the clerkship is approved, a Letter of Approval will be sent by the Clerkship office to the hospital together with the Clerkship Evaluation form and Malpractice Insurance Coverage.
5.
The Clinical Evaluation form must be submitted immediately upon completion of each rotation. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that a completed Clinical Evaluation is sent from the hospital in a timely manner. (Credit will be not granted if the clinical evaluation form is not received within one month of completion).
6.
Tuition fees must be paid in full at the beginning of each trimester (16 week period). Credit will not be granted for clerships completed while not registered.
P.S. Credit will not be granted for unsupervised (unauthorized) clinical rotations for failure to follow the above guidelines. (No Retroactive Clinical credit will be granted under any circumstances).
These guidelines must be strictly adhered to in order to comply with the Clinical Affiliation Agreement requirement of the medical licensing authorities.
CLINICAL ROTATIONS AT I.S.S.S.T.E. HOSPITAL, JUAREZ, MEXICO
The following revised guidelines are for students doing clinical rotations at ISSSTE Hospital, as of April 18, 2001:
1.
A student may do only ONE Clinical rotation at a time.
2.
No credit will be granted for clinical rotations completed outside of the ISSSTE Hospital System.
3.
You must request a letter of approval for the rotation from the clerkship offfice ONE WEEK prior to the beginning of each rotation.
4.
The Clinical Evaluation form must be received at the clerkship office no later than ONE MONTH after completion of each rotation in order to receive credit. Credit will not be given for evaluations received after the deadline.
5.
Follow the schedule of your Supervising Physician(s) to the hour. No Attendance-No credit. There are no exceptions.
6.
Dress code must be strictly adhered to: White lab coat, tie and shoes (No tennis shoes!)

SPARTAN ALUMNI CARDIOLOGIST WITH TV SERIES
HOST: Dr. Perry Krichmar, - Cardiology/Internal Medicine
Perry Krichmar, M.D., F.A.C.C. is an original partner of South Florida Cardiology Associates, since its inception in July of 1991. He is a native New Yorker and grew up in Monsey, N.Y. After graduating SUNY Binghamton, he attended Long Island University where he obtained his Masters Degree in Biomedical Sciences. He then attended Spartan Health Sciences University and graduated in 1986 in the top ten percent of his class.
Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine were completed at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Ct. This program was affiliated with Yale University school of Medicine, where almost a year of his training was spent at Yale New Haven Hospital. He then moved to Miami Beach, and completed his Cardiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, and recently became recertified in cardiovascular diseases.
Dr Krichmar's main interest includes the management of Lipid Disorders and Preventive Cardiology/Medicine. He is a National speaker for Berkeley Heart labs, which specializes in advanced lipid profiles. Dr Krichmar has recently gained national recognition for being the host of a new Public Television show called Healthy Body Healthy Mind. This Nationwide show is a half hour series focusing on common patient health issues. Dr Krichmar is very active in teaching Physicians about the latest trends in Cholesterol management and Cardiovascular risk prevention strategies.

SPARTAN ALUMNI SELECTED AS NEVADA'S STATE RESIDENT OF THE YEAR AND AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION'S NEVADA STATE RESIDENT
Dr. Kevin Bernstein, a 1992 Spartan graduate, was elected the State of Nevada's Resident of the Year by the American Psychiatric Association on April 2001. Previously he was elected Nevada's State Resident of the Year, an award that is voted by other Nevada residents. He was also selected as Chief Resident. Dr. Bernstein recently completed his residency at the University of Nevada-Reno Psychiatry program.
SPARTAN STUDENT TO RUN FOR ILLINOIS CONGRESS SEAT
Shawn Aranha, a 4th year Spartan medical student, is as of March 19th the Democratic Nominee for State Representative for the 41st District of the State of Illinois Congress. Aranha, 31, an Indian American medical student, will face Robert Biggins, Republican, in the general elections for State of Illinois representative from the 41st District of Illinois on November 5. The 41st district is a mix of cities from DuPage County, which tends to be Republican, and Cook County, which is predominantly Democratic. Some 3 to 4 percent of the district's population are Indians.
Aranha, a fourth year medical student at Spartan Health Sciences University, is scheduled to finish his course before the election. An Oak Brook, Illinois resident, he is the son of Dr. Gerald Aranha, professor and chief of surgical oncology at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. His mother Rose Aranha is a social worker. He has one sister. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1970. Dr. Gerald Aranha was the main surgeon to treat late Cardinal Bernadine of Archdiocese of Chicago to treat his cancer and became very popular amongst his colleagues and also he is th past president of India Catholic Association of America.
Shawn says his broad university studies, his medical education, and past involvement in community service (including experience in the office of Illinois Governor James Edgar for ethnic affairs and media) will help him serve the people of the district. He has won several awards during his school days and as a graduate student at Loyola University from where he obtained degrees in political science and psychology. He is the first president of the Spartan Medical School's chapter of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Douglas Hornsby, a current fellow at the Harvard School of Medicine's affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital at Boston, Massachussetts, was elected Resident of the Year 2001 by the Florida's Radiology Association. Dr. Hornsby performed his Radiology Residency at the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida and earned his undergraduate degree from Lemoyne-Owen College in Memphis, TN.









Information regarding hospitals location and the availability of clinical clerkships will be shared with graduates of the Basic Science Program only at the end of Fourth trimester in St. Lucia, West Indies.
