In the Pathology clerkship, the student will be expected to attend all the pathology conferences. He/she will review cases with the pathologist and accompany him/her when a fine needle aspiration or frozen section is done. The student will also spend time in the histology department with the pathologist while the gross examination is being done. If the opportunity arises, viewing of an autopsy at the medical examiners office will be encouraged.
GOALS:

a.  To obtain an understanding of the principles, practices and scope of the specialty of pathology.

b.  To understand the approach to the performance and analysis of routine and specialized pathological procedure and their importance as diagnostic tools.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

a.  To master the principles and related pathophysiology of the disease process, including gross and microscopic features, of human pathology.

b.  Be able to recognize morphologic patterns of disease and classify them in one of the areas, eg: neoplastic, inflammatory, immunologic, metastic, etc.

c.  To understand the foundation of laboratory tests that are useful in the clinical practice.

d.  To understand the approaches and limitations of cytology, needle biopsy, frozen sections, autopsies, etc.

e.  To corralate the clinical pathological findings.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

a.  Understanding of the criteria for and technique used in the performance of the following:

          1.  Pap smear
          2.  Needle biopsy
          3.  Aspiration biopsy
          4.  Fluid cytology
          5.  Frozen sections
          6.  "Touch preparations"
          7.  Specimen photography
          8.  Post-mortem
          9.  CBC
          10.  Routine chemistry studies
          11.  Serum, plasma, urine, and stool analysis
          12.  Serology
          13.  Culture
          14.  Hematology tests
          15.  Immunologic tests
          16.  Blood handling techniques

b.  Understanding and recognizing the main, normal and abnormal findings, associated risks, indications, etc., with the above listed procedures.
