GOALS:

a. To obtain an understanding of the principles practices and scope of the specialty of Psychiatry.

b. To understand the psychoanalytic and psychopharmacologic approach to the management of patients with psychiatric disorders.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

a. Assess the importance information that is needed to be obtained regarding the patients current illness and the methods of obtaining this data.

b. Obtain a concise and a complete medical history from the patient and other sources where applicable. Assess the validity and accuracy of each source.

c. Assess each item in the problem list and provide an appropriate differential diagnosis and diagnostic and/or treatment plan where indicated.

d. Support the diagnostic and treatment plans by assessment of the risks and benefits to the patient.

e. Follow the patient's therapy to develop an understanding of the diseases process and its response to treatment.

f. Develop appropriate communication skills in regards to discussions with the patient and patient's family about the patient's illness, treatment and prognosis.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

a. Ability to collect a pertinent life history and psychiatric case history from the patient and his family. Due to the special nature of the psychiatric history, the following items should be carefully assessed:

1. Chief complaint
2. History of present illness
3. Past medical history
4. Past psychiatric history
5. Family history
6. Psychological growth and development
7. School, social and occupational history

b. Ability to perform the following:

1. Mental status examination
2. Complete neurological examination

c. Basic understanding of the following:

1. Psychosis
- Schizophrenia
- Mania
- Depression
- Organic brain syndrome

2. Neurosis
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Personality disorders
This rotation is designed to build upon the knowledge developed during the first and second years. In addition, the curriculum will provide an opportunity for supervised conduct of psychiatric interviews; general diagnostic study of hospitalized patients with psychotic reaction and serious character disturbances.
